Cathy, who has been mentored by Dormen mentor Geoff Mullis for several years, was delighted with the result and said: “It is absolutely fantastic to be recognised for all our hard work & I would like to extend our thanks to everyone for their continued support.”

After hearing about Dormen – Dorset Business Mentoring – and how it operates, Jim Knight said: “I was very interested to hear about Dormen, which is undoubtedly making a valuable contribution to businesses and the local economy in Dorset. I am particularly grateful to all the volunteers who give freely of their time and experience, and so make it all possible. The Government supports mentoring schemes in many forms right across the UK, as they can be extremely useful and represent remarkable value for money.”

A meeting was held recently in Dorchester to brief the Rt Hon Oliver Letwin, MP for West Dorset, on the Dormen Business Mentoring Programme. It involved Kevin Poulton, East Dorset District Council’s Economic Generation Manager, Vivian Dunn, Dormen’s Programme Manager, and Tony Garvey, one of Dormen’s volunteer business mentors. The history and current operation of the programme was covered, and Tony Garvey described in detail the progress made by some of his clients.

Mr Letwin took a great interest in the programme and hearing about its clients and said “I was enormously impressed by what I heard about Dormen”.

L to R: Vivian Dunn, Tony Garvey, Oliver Letwin MP, Kevin Poulton

A few days later, in his ‘In my view’ article in the Western Gazette, Oliver Letwin wrote:

“A few days ago, I met some of the remarkable people who constitute Dorset Mentoring (or Dormen for short).

As its name suggests, this is a home-grown Dorset-based organisation that makes use of the fact that some very distinguished businessmen and businesswomen have retired here and are more than willing to offer considerable chunks of their time for free to help people who are trying to make their way in new businesses. The fact that the whole thing is voluntary, enables it to operate in a flexible way.

It is just a question of two people – one the helper, the other the helped – being put in touch with one another and then, hey presto, amazing businesses come to life.

I was shown examples of local companies that have established themselves as market-leaders in double-quick time - making things that people really want, and making profits for their originators. The secret is putting the energy and inspiration of the entrepreneur together with the battle-scarred experience of the mentor.”

We have also been fortunate in being able to recruit a number of new mentors recently in order to meet this growth in demand, and so we now have a total of over 50.”

The Feb/Mar 09 issue features Matt Smith who runs ‘Tony Hair’, a hairdressing business in Highcliffe. Matt has been mentored by Ann Abernethie, who has been a Dormen mentor virtually from the start of the project in 2005.

In the article, Matt says: “The Dormen scheme was a revelation. The mentor I had was really on the ball. In just a few hours of talking things through I learned so much – partly about the salon’s appearance and the importance of it to the client, but particularly about cutting costs and controlling costs. It was exactly what I needed – someone who was completely unbiased, who was asking me why are you doing that and have you thought about doing this?”

The Mar/Apr 09 issue includes features on two businesses which have Dormen mentors. Wellworths is the new Dorchester store, based in the old Woolworth’s premises, which has attracted so much media attention across the country. The manager of the store, Claire Robertson, now has a Dormen mentor, Valerie Stevens, to support her.

Another article features Honeybuns, the bakery near Sherborne, run by Matt and Emma Goss-Custard who are supported by Mike Collins, another very experienced mentor.

Emma says: “Mike Collins, the Dormen mentor, has been very good at challenging our thinking and helping us with a revised business plan, looking further forward than we might have done otherwise. We are now looking five to 10 years ahead.”

Briefing meetings have recently been held with two Dorset MPs – Annette Brooke, MP for Mid Dorset and North Poole, and Bob Walter, MP for North Dorset – to update them on how Dormen is supporting local businesses.

They heard about the programme from Kevin Poulton, East Dorset District Council’s Economic Generation Manager, Camilla Trimble, who runs Nazareth Lodge in Sturminster Newton and is a volunteer business mentor, and Vivian Dunn, Dormen’s Programme Manager.

Both were very interested in Dormen and particularly the way in which it enables experienced business people to volunteer to act as mentors and share their skills and knowledge with other businesses.

After the meeting Bob Walter MP said:

“This is a really challenging time for business across the board and I think it’s vital that we all do what we can to ensure companies are aware of this type of support, which is available to them free of charge”.

“Mentoring is a valuable tool that’s shown itself to be highly effective in both the public and private sectors, and I know that in the 3 years its been running DORMEN has already proven its worth. The team are currently in the process of working with 139 businesses and I have no doubt that they will help many more consolidate or grow in the years ahead”.

“There is a great deal of untapped business expertise out there and this scheme draws on that valuable and willing resource. I sincerely hope that, by highlighting this meeting, we encourage many more volunteers to come forward for mentor selection and training.

“As Camilla Trimble said, it’s about ‘Dorset people helping Dorset businesses’ and in my view demonstrates the benefits of using local knowledge to help the local economy.”

Award winners were selected from over 1,700 entries from 30 countries.

The winning video Glass Artist is one of ten commissioned by the Science Council for their secondary education project Future Morph. The programme was developed to encourage young people study maths and the sciences to a higher level.

Full-VideoSolutions Director, Celia Middleton, said: ‘Our mentors from Dormen have given us terrific support through the start-up period. Now, thanks to the Award and a strong website, enquiries are up and business is looking good despite the crunch.’

Full-VideoSolutions worked with two Dormen mentors, initially Trevor Dutton and then Joe Windsor.
